Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme, supported by the National Cyber Security Centre. It sets out the basic protections every business should have against the most common online threats: the everyday phishing, hacking and malware that target small businesses far more often than people realise.
Achieving it shows your customers, suppliers and insurers that your business meets a recognised security standard. For many small businesses it’s the most practical first step in taking security seriously, and it’s a realistic one rather than a daunting, expensive project.
There are two levels, and the difference is straightforward.
Cyber Essentials – is a verified self-assessment. You complete a questionnaire about how your business is protected, and it’s reviewed and certified. It’s a strong, credible baseline.
Cyber Essentials Plus – goes further. It adds a hands-on technical audit by an external assessor, who independently checks the protections are genuinely in place and working. Because it’s verified rather than self-declared, it carries more weight, and it’s the level we hold.
In plain terms: Cyber Essentials says you’ve answered the questions correctly. Cyber Essentials Plus says someone qualified has checked, and proven it.
It’s increasingly expected of you – More contracts, tenders and larger clients now require suppliers to hold Cyber Essentials before they’ll work with them, and some public-sector work requires it outright. Having it can be the difference between winning work and being ruled out before you start.
It reassures your customers – Showing that a government-backed scheme has independently verified your security tells clients their data is in safe hands. In a world of constant breach headlines, that trust is worth a lot.
It can support your insurance position – Holding the certification can strengthen your standing with insurers, and Cyber Essentials can include cyber insurance for eligible UK businesses. Terms vary, so it’s worth checking what applies to you, and we can help you understand it.
